Wood Stove Tax Credit
The Federal Wood Stove Tax Credit Has Ended
The federal 25(C) biomass tax credit expired on December 31, 2025 — seven years earlier than originally planned. New stove purchases and installations made in 2026 or later are not eligible for the federal credit. However, if you installed before December 31, 2025, you can still claim it on your 2025 tax return. Some state programs still apply — see below.
What Was the Federal Biomass Tax Credit?
Credit Amount
30% of the total cost — including both the stove purchase and professional installation — capped at $2,000 per year. No lifetime limit.
Eligibility Window
Stoves installed between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2025 qualified. The cutoff was based on installation date, not purchase date.
Qualifying Products
EPA-certified wood or pellet stoves with a thermal efficiency of at least 75% HHV. Included Vermont Castings, Osburn, Enerzone, Buck Stove, and others.
Why It Ended Early
The "One Big Beautiful Bill" (Budget Reconciliation Act), signed in 2025, terminated the credit seven years ahead of the original 2032 expiry date.
Installed Before December 31, 2025? You Can Still Claim It.
State Rebate Programs
Your State May Still Offer Incentives
While the federal credit has ended, many states continue to offer their own rebates and incentives for upgrading to a high-efficiency wood or pellet stove. Programs vary by state and change frequently — so we recommend checking directly.

Orion Multi is an awesome fireplace and makes an immediate statement! Arrived quickly with great support from the staff when the fireplace arrived, it had been damaged in shipping. Royal fire pits was quick to remedy this and sent out a new unit the very next day.
