Frequently Asked Questions

How does a gas fireplace work?

Gas flows from a supply line (propane OR natural gas) into the burner, which is ignited via either a standing pilot light or electronic ignition. The flame heats ceramic logs, glass beads, or some other media, which radiates warmth into the room. Yes, these fireplaces generate REAL heat with BTU ratings up to 50,000.

Is it easy to convert a wood-burning fireplace to gas?

It’s pretty straightforward, yes. A gas insert just goes into your existing firebox and connects to a gas line. You can reline the chimney for venting. You just need a gas supply run, and it’s best to have this handled by a licensed installer. No major structural work needed, though.

Do gas fireplaces need chimneys or ventilation?

Chimney: no. Ventilation: sometimes. Direct-vent models go through a wall or roof. B-vent models require a vertical flue. Ventless fireplaces don’t require any of this, though. They don’t put out as much heat, but they’re very simple to install.

What are the other installation requirements for gas fireplaces?

You need a gas supply line to the location of your fireplace. You also need a non-combustible surround that meets the unit’s clearance specs (you may already have this). You also need an electrical connection in many cases.

How much does a gas fireplace cost?

Our most affordable models start around $609 for a basic ventless insert. More sophisticated models can cost a few thousand dollars. We do have larger, more advanced models that cost over $10k. It really depends on size, style, and installation method. We can help set expectations if you reach out.

Why do I see a little blue flame after turning my gas fireplace off?

Don’t fret - that’s your pilot light! It stays on if you have a millivolt ignition system. This way, the fireplace instantly ignites when you turn it on. It uses pretty much no gas. But models with electric ignition don’t have it if this is something you don’t want.

How to maintain a gas fireplace?

Schedule an annual inspection with a qualified technician to assess the burner, ignition, venting, and gas connections. That’s really it!
