Frequently asked questions
What is a high-efficiency wood stove?
They meet EPA 2020 emissions standards, which means combustion efficiency of at least 70%. They also use secondary burn chambers or catalytic wood stove technology to reburn smoke and gases before they exit the flue.
What is the most fuel-efficient wood-burning stove?
The Vermont Castings Defiant is rated at 84% HHV efficiency in catalytic mode and can burn a single load up to 14 hours. It’s the most efficient model we stock. The Drolet HT-3000 is 78% HHV efficiency, and the Buck Stove Model 91 is 80% HHV efficiency.
What's the difference between catalytic and non-catalytic?
Catalytic stoves send smoke through a combustor that ignites gases at lower temperatures. They burn longer and more evenly. Non-catalytic stoves re-ignite smoke inside the firebox using secondary burn tubes. Both meet EPA standards, but catalytic models can burn longer and more efficiently. On the other hand, non-catalytic models need less maintenance since there's no combustor to replace over time. There are trade-offs either way. Neither is inherently “better.”
What's the worst firewood to burn?
Softwoods like pine and spruce burn fast and leave more creosote in the flue. Green (unseasoned) wood is worse. It holds too much moisture. We recommend hardwoods like oak or maple - ideally seasoned for 6+ months.
Do high-efficiency wood stoves qualify for a tax credit?
Yes! Models with at least 75% HHV efficiency may qualify for the federal biomass stove tax credit, which could cover up to 30% of your purchase (capped at $2,000).
