What does EPA-certified wood stove mean?

An EPA-accredited lab has tested the stove and meets the 2020 New Source Performance Standards for particulate emissions. That means it puts out less than 2.0 grams per hour. You know the stove burns clean enough to be legally installed in any state.

What are the EPA requirements for wood stoves?

The current standard was laid out in May of 2020 and puts a strict 2.0-gram-per-hour cutoff on all new residential wood heaters (no matter the combustion type). Brands must report emission rates and efficiency to earn EPA accreditation. Every model in this collection checks the EPA-certification box.

Can I install a non-EPA-certified wood stove?

Not in most states. A few places do make exceptions if the stove is your only heat source, but you won’t be able to install a NEW wood stove that is not EPA-certified. Some states have even stricter requirements than current EPA emission standards (Washington and Oregon, for instance). 

What is the difference between EPA and non-EPA wood stoves?

EPA-certified wood stoves reburn smoke and gases through secondary combustion or catalytic converters before letting them leave the flue, cutting particulate output and making for a far more efficient stove.
