At what size is a wood stove considered “small?”

We classify any wood stove with a firebox under 2 cubic feet as small. These stoves can still heat around 1,500 square feet, though. They’re only small in the context of a larger wood stove, which we have plenty of here at Royal Fire Pits as well!

How much heat does a small wood-burning stove produce? 

Way more than you’d think. Some of the models in our lineup can put out 48,000 BTU (the Vermont Castings Encore). How do I install a tiny wood stove?

You might want to hire a professional to make sure the small wood stove is installed properly the first time around, especially if you have to route a chimney through walls or ceilings. Most of these models need a 6” chimney (at least 12’ tall for draft). It’s imperative that you have proper clearance from combustibles (walls, ceilings, furniture, etc.), too. The stove should be set on a fire-rated floor pad that extends past the unit on all sides. 

How do I maintain my tiny wood-burning stove? 

Remove ash as it accumulates and have the chimney inspected and swept annually. Clean the glass every so often, and replace door gaskets as the seals wear thin. Small wood-burning stoves don’t need a ton of maintenance. 

What are the safety precautions for a small wood-burning stove? 

You may want to install a carbon monoxide detector, but our EPA-certified wood stove collection takes a lot of this stress out of the equation. You should only burn seasoned hardwood (never treated lumber or trash). Make sure you have a fire extinguisher somewhere nearby.
