Frequently asked questions
What are the dimensions of a large wood stove?
We consider every stove in this collection to be “large,” but dimensions vary quite a bit. The Vermont Castings Defiant measures 32-⅜” wide by 28-⅞” high by 23-¾” deep. It weighs 518 pounds. That’s a massive hunk of cast iron! Then there’s the Encore, which comes in at 27” wide by 25-¾” high by 22-¾” deep at 475 pounds. You should budget for at least 36” of clearance to combustibles on all sides when measuring, too.
How big are the fireboxes on large stoves?
Around 2 cubic feet, give or take a few inches. The Defiant’s firebox is 3.2 cubic feet, capable of taking 20”+ logs and burning for over 14 hours on a single load. You might not need something that big, though, so we have options in our small wood stove if need be, too.
What is the largest wood stove available?
That would be the Vermont Castings Defiant for sure. It puts out a whopping 56,000 BTU, heating up to 2,800 square feet with its massive 3.2 cubic foot firebox. It’s one of the most impressive Vermont Castings wood stoves we carry here at Royal Fire Pits.
What is the best large wood-burning stove?
That depends on what you care about most in a large wood stove, but you can’t go wrong with anything from Vermont Castings. They’ve been the #1 choice for a cast-iron wood stove since 1975. Every model is EPA-certified with top-loading doors and multiple furniture-grade finishes to choose from. They have FlexBurn technology, too, which lets you choose if you want to burn with the catalytic converter on or off. We also carry Buck Stove, though, another world-renowned brand. You honestly can’t go wrong with any of the stoves in our collection.
Do I need an EPA-certified stove?
An EPA-certified wood stove is a must for any permanent home installation these days. These types of stoves adhere to strict federal emission standards and are mandated in most states. Every stove we stock is EPA-certified.
How do I measure my space to make sure I choose the right stove?
Calculate the square footage of the area you want to heat. We recommend 5,000ish BTU for every 200 square feet (assuming your home is well-insulated). You might need more output if you have a particularly high ceiling or poor insulation. Get a personalized recommendation from our experts today!
